Throughout my time as a UX/UI designer at Future Cities Laboratory, a Swiss research institute’s satellite company in Singapore, I worked on projects focusing on big data visualisation and urban planning with researchers and computer scientists. The projects required developing digital products/prototypes and publishing research papers. I contributed to writing four academic papers and a chapter in a published book and presenting research outcomes at international conferences.
This book is the second volume in the Future Cities Laboratory Indicia series that focuses on the tools, methods and approaches needed for urban research. In short, following Marshall McLuhan’s famous provocation, the editors focus less on the message and more on the medium of research. This involves retreating from research contents—the topics, themes, questions, hypotheses, insights, ideas, concepts, and thoughts—for the moment to consider the materials, methods, tools, techniques, and approaches that support them.
Our team dedicated a chapter titled Singapore Views: A Collaborative Interactive Visualisation and Analysis Framework for Urban Planning and Design. We explained our strategy and thoughts behind Singapore Views, used technology and data, design and case studies. I wrote a whole section of Design Principles.
